In Unit III, we've been contemplating the images, perceptions, and performance of black bodies. We've had some rich dialogue, but I've challenged you to think about how black bodies can be manipulated by others. So, I ask you: "In what ways do we see how 'others' control black bodies in society?" Please be specific, and don't wait until the last minute, so that others can read your valuable insight. I highly encourage you to include an element of multimedia to enhance your position. Please refer to my blogging rubric found below. I look forward to reading your comments! Enjoy!

We see “others” control black bodies on a day-to-day basis in today’s society. Terms such, as “Mandingo and Big booty Judy” have been extremely prevalent in contemporary society. These terms generally refer Mandingo to the African American males penis and indicate that “Big booty Judy” correlates with the black woman’s buttocks. Whites seem to find a huge amount of entertainment in viewing the African American body whilst on the other hand; the black man tends to use “Hot Pussy” as a promotion mechanism. Furthermore, I say promotion, in terms of using “the butt” and other voluptuous parts that a black woman exemplifies, as a central element of music videos, movies, club flyers etc. In addition to that, on an elementary basis, black men seem to find a big butt and big breasts as the key that holds there way into a sexual domain. Not only do they use the opposite sex as a way to sexualize, but they tend to use there own body parts hence the way in which a black man tends to boast about his “huge penis/Mandingo”. Twerking has also picked up a huge amount of popularity in the recent years and is constantly drawn back to the black female community. Although many other races attempt to emulate the bodily movement, the notion of twerking has been slandered time and time again. Using the term “others”, I’ve contrasted black on white as well as black on black due to the simple fact that othering simultaneously happens within ones own race.

ReplyDeleteDuring slavery days black bodies were viewed as a source of labor, curiosity, and sexual pleasure. Women had no identity, most were objects for the masters pleasure or a "mammy" who gave all of her time to her master's family instead of attending to her own family. In today’s society we see others control black bodies in ways that are similar to ways that they were viewed during slavery. Some women allow men or another human being to control who they are, what choices they make in life, and make them cater to them. Allowing someone else to take control of their body and show them off as if they are trophies is just like being an object of pleasure to the "master". Instead of a woman creating her own identity she allow someone else to do it allowing herself to be only an object. This case does not only reflected in black women but in black men as well. We as a black community allow ourselves to live up to the stereotype and the labels that are placed over Blacks. Are black’s only murders, rapist, uneducated, living off the government, bad parents, dropout while the list could go on, I rather stop and ask are we somebody, and are we above the titles that are giving to us? Sometimes we as Blacks can find ourselves accepting the title that society gives us to wear. Society wants to control who we are and who we become. Reflecting back to the video that we watched in class about soul food and how it is bad for us it also made me realize that society knows our dietary background. With that being said our favorite food that we are familiar with and that are very unhealthy are priced at an low rate while healthier foods are priced at an higher amount, and this causes obesity, and unhealthy living. Society controls black bodies every day, and every day it goes unknown.

DeleteThere are many ways "others" control black bodies in society. In Selling hot pussy, it has many examples of how people see and control us. The first being Sarah Baartman, for she was completely taking control of. Even after she was dead, "others" still had full control of her body. Tina Turner was another that was controlled. She was made to dress half naked and dance all over the place, and due to this many times she wasn't getting complimented for her singing but for her body. Even the great Aretha Franklin had to deal with "others" controlliing her and her songs. Many of our women are getting sexualized and viewed as sexual toys. Another factor to our bodies being controlled has to be the media and internet. The internet has one of the biggest influences on how we are being viewed, seen, and controlled. When they see us twerking and dressing half naked, they assume that's what we are all doing and how we all act. And when we don't act like that they are often wondering, "what's wrong with you?". Our young women are looking up to these reality stars, who are controlled by the man behind the screen. Take a look at this video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEdSw-LSYIk, and you will see what the internet makes it seem like we are supposed to do and how we are being sexualized. Many times I will here African Americans criticize our own race; for example by saying, "you're not black" or "you act white" just because someone may not want to partake in certain activities. That is due to the internet and society making others and even ourselves believe we are something that we are not. These are great examples of how "others" are controlling black bodies in society.
ReplyDeleteToday many females bodies are being controlled by men. Women seem to do whatever men want them to do if they are scared of them. Women can also have control over mens bodies. If she is drop dead gorgeous or something, men will tend to do anything "to get in her drawers." Many people have control over people if they are addicted to drugs. Without the drug many people tend to go crazy or just do the wrong things. I agree with what Kishawana said about slavery. We as black people were viewed as everything but human. The white people had control over our bodies. If you think about it the entertainment industry has control over a lot of people. They have people wanting to change their bodies to look like theirs and wanting the things that they have.

ReplyDeleteCurrently, there is a movement called "Black lives matter " in fact, it's grown to be nationwide around the United States. It's purpose to inform and support black lives that needs justice . Many African American teenagers are being murdered upon probable cause. Needless to say, if you feel a ounce of your life in danger without having a weapon , law enforcement has the right to shoot to kill. The Ferguson shooting attached will go into more depth. The point not just that black lives can be disposed of so easily: they are targeted and hunted by a police force that is becoming increasingly brutal over its race war by every grand jury decision that ratifies the point of view of state violence. Justifying lethal violence in the name of self defense is for those who have a publicly recognized self to defend. Those whose lives are not considered to matter, whose lives are perceived as a threat to the life that white Americans can have the privilege of destroying in the name of that life is simply unjust.
ReplyDeleteNot only has some states been mandated that police officers are required to be under surveillance on shifts but senseless acts are being caught on tape as if it was any other regular day at work. Targeting black lives Is a repeated cycle that hasn't found an end or solution. All lives matter just depending on which color is holding the trigger.

ReplyDelete"Shake your money maker like somebody's about to pay ya!". I truly believe this song lyric made famous by rapper Ludacris clearly depicts what has become of the female body in today's society. If your body is not barely clothed, gyrating to the latest hit club song then more likely than not, no one is paying close attention. In society today, bodies, especially the female body, are being exploited. Most women are either enhancing or correcting what they believe to be flaws to become an exaggerated representation of the "ideal" female. You rarely ever see many bodies become famous while clothed. Many celebrities have been "under the knife" at least once. It never ceases to amaze me how these images and depictions of women are so well received.
Kim Kardashian known for her large derriere "broke the Internet" with her nude pictorial spread in Paper magazine, however, many critics, including myself, believe that her images are nothing more than a continued exploitation and fetishism of the black female body.
Many celebrities are lashing out against perpetuated stereotypes. Recently actress Zendaya called out fashion magazine Modeliste for altering her images to make her look lighter and slimmer. The actress was appalled to find out that the magazine had manipulated her appearance.
Her Instagram caption read "Had a new shoot come out today and was shocked when I found my 19 year old hips and torso quite manipulated. These are the things that make women self conscious, that create the unrealistic ideals of beauty that we have. Anyone who knows who I am knows that I stand for honest and pure self love. So I took it upon myself to release the real pic (right side) and I love it. Thank you @modelistemagazine for pulling down the images and fixing this retouch issue."

ReplyDeleteWhen I hear the phrase controlling black bodies I begin to think about slavery and how Nubian people were taken from their native lands and brought to America. Nubian people were stripped of their culture and identity. Nubian's were forced against each other depending on how close they were to the slave master. For instance, the overseer would mistreat the other slaves because he wanted to be on good terms with the white man. In today's society the system is the same but even more manipulative. Just like in the clip I posted Nubian people are seen as nothing more than slaves and entertainment. Sarah Barton was a Nubian Slave that performed for years for white bodies. Now these same white bodies are even more captivated by the Nubian's woman body. For example, white people are now changing to these same body parts they use to call animal like.
ReplyDeleteControlling black bodies is a phrase that white america has been trying to do for so long. but to be honest we are not controllable. The video itself states they move the intelligent Nubian people up so the will not try to rise up against the white man. But now there are so many intelligent Nubian people no longer hindered by the mindset slave master placed on our ancestors. More and more Nubian's are becoming aware of how controlling the white man is and is not going to settle.

ReplyDeleteIn Bell Hooks Selling Hot Pussy she discussed how black bodies, specifically black female bodies are controlled by men to be sold for the public to consume. This has been a prevalent theme throughout time from Sarah Bartman to Tina Turner. In society today this can still be seen when it pertains to rappers. Because of the all the different forms of social media, the world is flooded with music and seems that you cannot be successful unless you have a gimmick. With rappers like Nicki Minaj and Lil Kim they had to put out an overly sexual image created by their male counterparts in order to be heard. It has become a necessity to put out something out that coincides with whats trending today. Black bodies in hip hop are controlled by pop culture it has lead to denigration of black art in hip hop. We have gone from this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzfqIRuLiVc to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0-F88c6Hrk
ReplyDeleteThe BLACK body being controlled is subliminal but very common in today's society. When we think back to the discussions in class during Unit 3, we've seen how the body has been made to portray a certain vibe, generalization rather, of black individuals. Thinking back to the D'angelo music video "How Does It Feel" we saw how it seemed that D'angelo wasn't in control. It almost looked as if he didn't want to be apart of the video of HIS own song. It almost goes back to the days of slavery, how slaves were put on auction, to showcase everything from body parts to the teeth inside their mouthes. We see this today in magazines, movies, and even music still. White America has put an image on black bodies, no matter the depth of individuals, and have ran with the thought of how we should and should not be seen not only on television, but in society. "Others" have been accustomed to the less clothed, the more the black body sales. Black people are conscious to the stereotypes placed on us by "others". We found ourselves acting differently around certain people, not satisfying the already perceived stereotypes. The images below are examples of how the black body is controlled and used to fulfill the stereotype set upon us.

ReplyDeleteThere are many ways that we see 'others' controlling black bodies in today's society. This does not only apply to women but men as well. The most noticeable ways that 'others' seem to have control over black bodies is by sexualizing them for their own personal gratification, etc. Another way is by limiting store, farmers markets, etc. in the Black community, so they aren't able to purchase healthy foods that will benefit them. Black bodies endured so much during slavery because they were labeled as property and used as sexual puppets. White men loved to misuse and treat black women as if they were anything but human. In the film, "12 Years a Slave," there was a scene involving Master Epps and Patsey. He was performing a sexual act on her, which she wasn't responding to. Master Epps resorted to extreme measures for her to respond to her acts, which led to him choking her. Patsy immediately responded after this. Master Epps was sort of a sexual sadist. This showed how white men had control over black bodies. They only looked at them as property, but they wanted their "property" to respond to their sexual advances. Let's not forget about Sarah Bartmann either. She was poked and prodded for just being different. Her anatomy was something that white men hadn't been exposed to before and they wanted to show her off as entertainment. She served as their own minstrel show. Women are still viewed like that today. Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, and other women of famous stature are mimicking Sarah Bartmann. They aren't doing it out of spite, but it's what they seem accustomed to. Beyonce's alter-ego, Sasha Fierce, was not only created by her but was influenced by her husband, Jay-Z. Just like how Tina served as Ike's sexual representation of a "wild woman", Beyonce is Jay-Z's Sasha Fierce. This can also be seen as a woman having control over a man as well. Because of her physical appearance. she captures his attention and he's suddenly drawn to her. Entertainers are known for controlling other black bodies, who are their fans and consumers. They do this with their appearance, music, approach, etc. Fans tend to want to do everything that they see their "idols" doing. That sounds like having the power to control to me. Black bodies are also controlled when it comes to getting adequate nutrition and healthy food. In Byron Hurt's documentary called "Soul Food Junkies," Dr. Marc Lamont Hill stated that black people aren't able to purchase or have access to healthy food because of the various systems and structures that have been placed upon them. He defined this situation as classic textbook racism because of how white people have access of healthy food options while black people are being deprived of it. This shows how white people have control over the black body because they aren't allowing them to get the proper nutrition that they're entitled to. Dr. Marc Lamont Hill this as the 21st Century Genocide.

ReplyDeleteIn today's society, there are a plethora of examples that prove how "others" are controlling black bodies. When I hear that, my primary thought takes me back to the time of slavery. Black men and women were seen as everything except humans. They were treated like animals. They were used to work in the fields and were punished with heinous tortures. Not only were slaves treated as animals, they were used for sexual desires. Their bodies were literally displayed and they were auctioned off based on their body type. White slave owners were known for raping their slaves and white woman were seen to be sexually attracted to black men (slaves). But, although slavery is over, I still see "others" controlling black bodies today. its mostly prevalent in the music industry and social media. "twerking" is a prime example of a woman's body being "controlled". Music producers, who are sometimes white, produce music that makes it easy for a woman to twerk to. so when woman hear the sound of the music, they are tempted to shake their buttocks without even knowing it. The rappers who perform these songs enjoy seeing women twerk, and because it it is something they enjoy, they dont realize that they are being controlled as well. On social media, there are many post of woman, as well as gay men, twerking and it is praised. Music artist are known for their physical attributes before their talent is even noticed. For example, when Nicki Minaj performs , shes usually wearing tight clothes to bring attention to her curvacious body. Although she is a talented rapper, men (black and white), see her as someone that they would just want to have sex with. There are so many examples , but i see it most in our music industry and young men and woman try to emulate what it seen on stage.

ReplyDeleteBlack bodies have been manipulated since we started this country, preforming all the tasks that needed to be done to start such a sprawling nation. From then are bodies have been manipulated and put on a stage, and our minds have been shaped to not only find discord with ourselves but to also only focus on physical things. In the black community it is a lack of strong resources to get the right type of food and knowledge to feed our young for their excellence. Fresh foods and vegetable are scared, making our bodies preform weakly. We are sickly and also have a staggering number of young men with no direction in their life, which in turn causes many to be filled with rage. A typical mad black man is how they have us preform. A society and culture revolving around Eurocentric scenes of beauty is how we perform. Straight opposition and talk of revolution is a reaction that most should have when looking at the wide scope of America’s history and influence. Consumerism and society and that portrayed in films makes selfless people preform passionately. Passionately trying to break down a system we know to be wrong. We are trying to break down the “others” (whites) perception of black inferiority (which should actually be superiority) and literal systems of oppression (i.e. prison industrial complex).
