Fall 2017 - Unit I: Moral Monsters

During this unit, we've identified the "irony" of white saviors as moral monsters.  The concept of "saving them from themselves" is examined in our readings and viewings. From A Red Record to Tim Wise's "Trayvon Martin, White America and the return of Dred Scott," we're discussing the actions of several who consider their purpose "to serve and protect," as well as to protect the traditional "American values" this country was founded on. So, I ask you, how do you negotiate with a "moral monster?" Are these individuals salvageable, or are they a lost cause?  Where would you begin your dialogue?  Finally, do you believe there will be another LA Riots?

Due: Wed., 9/13/17 by the beginning of class.

  2. You can't have a dialogue with a moral monster unless they want to have a dialogue with you. They already have preconceived ideas about how black people "are", and more likely than not, would not want to have a conversation with a black person, especially when we would be trying to convince them that they are wrong or to think differently. If they are willing to have a conversation, the best place to start is to have them explain why they think the way that they do. After that, share your personal experience with them that would make their beliefs null & void, remind them of slavery and how we can't get over it, and how far removed we aren't from the generation that fought for civil rights. A good point that Tim Wise man is that white people (primarily supremacists) associate their whiteness with humanity, normalcy, and pureness/goodness, so any way of saying that white is not always wright or that they are not superior to the rest of everyone else in the world would be seen to them as an attack on their humanity, which may make it harder to have a conversation with them. Although no on else but black people should have a dialogue with them regarding our community and the effects of white supremacy on our race, it should not be our job to. We should not feel like we have to or are forced to have conversations with every single white nationalist to change their way of thinking. They do need to be educated, but in some cases they need to just educate themselves. I would say that a majority of them are a lost cause, especially neo-Nazis and those still trying to ensure that KKK are held in their cities, but if the few that are willing to have a dialogue attempt to change their ideology, they may not be a total lost cause. We have already seen instances of riots and lootings in places such as Ferguson in retaliation to police brutality. I believe that if Police brutality continues to be apparent and get worse, or really even if it just constantly happens at the rate that it's going, then there is a chance of another L.A. riots happening. People have tried many, many times to peacefully protest and rally, but we have seen the police attack and arrest black people for peacefully assembling, so being attacked then can lead to us fighting back. There's only so much we can take. Everyday is a struggle. Everyday is a chance for us to be killed because of our skin color. Everyday is a chance to get pulled over for driving while black, and possibly getting shot for following an officer's directions. Everyday is a fight for our lives, and with the way white people have been presenting themselves towards, with anger, violence, and hate, we may literally have to start fighting back with whatever force we have to use.

  4. I believe that it is hard to negotiate with someone that is considered a "moral monster". These people believe that the white race is better than any other races, their on a petal stool, they consider us dirty apes. Their stuck in the past and what was taught to them from their parents, teachers, family members, etc. Part of believes these individuals can be salvageable if they actually sit down and learn something and just not go off of what someone has said. I would start my dialogue by asking them what makes them think their better than any other race, why have they grown so much hate rage and discuss in their hearts. I believe that if the law enforcement continues to act the way the act now towards the people, another riot can break out due to the mistreatment.

  5. In my opinion, I believe that trying to negotiate with those types of people is a waste of our breath and also our time. I honestly feel that those people have been coached and brought up in a "its my way or the highway" type of mentality. I feel like them thinking that way will be there down fall in the future and we should just let them fall when that time comes. White people with that type of mentality can never be saved from those thoughts. Back when we still had Martin Luther King Jr. and around the time Selma happened, they killed white people that marched with and labeled them as "nigger lovers." Today, as we saw with the Tim Wise video, they didn't even associate him as a white man but as a jew because he calls them out for what they are. So, in my opinion, if they don't even respect their own then there is no way we can really sit down and have a discussion with them on the things that they already know aren't right. They are far past a lost cause. Me as a person don't believe in having dialogue with these people. I have two different things that I think would end all of this. First, I believe we should come together and stop supporting these undercover racist business and business owners. Once we take our money out of there pockets, they will start to feel the pain and humble down. Second, I believe in "an eye for an eye." I don't think that turn the other cheek thing works. Once we start to get the black police chief and the black mayor, we should use that to our advantage, just like they did during segregation times. Lastly, I do believe that there will be another LA riot but I hope this time its world wide. I hope that every major city stands up and do what they have to do. I only say that because that was the only thing that seems to have gotten the worlds attention and to have a more heartfelt discussion about the seriousness of racism and the impact it has on the targeted community.

  6. Moral: concerned with or derived from the code of interpersonal behavior that is considered right or acceptable in a particular society.
For one to be a moral monster they would fight for what was right and/or acceptable within our society. The people that we are discussing are however brutalizing and terrorizing innocent members of the society in which they also reside. This country was built on a misconstrued set of morals and values; if this weren't true then the Indigenous people would still have a place to call "home". These people can't be negotiated with because they do not see where their fault lies in anything. It's almost as though they are oblivious to the real issues at hand. I'm not sure if these people can be saved. At this point it may be too late for the ones that a set in their ways, but we can still help to teach and reprogram those of them that may have a heart and are willing to stand up for what is morally correct for all people. I wouldn't dare part my mouth to negotiate anything with person that doesn't think that I deserve the same basic rights as them because my skin is rich with melanin. I could scream my views at that person until I'm purple in the face, but that does not mean that they are going to change their ways. There is another LA Riots coming in our near future. The racial issues within this country have not gotten any better since 1992 if anything it's gotten worse. Police are still killing black people on purpose. The only difference from then and now is that today they admit it openly while being aware that they are on camera.

  7. In my opinion everybody is a little racist to some extent. I also believe that racism will always exist due to human nature. Its in human nature to fear what is different and we all cope with fear differently. Some peoples' coping mechanism for fear is hatred and aggression, this is what these white supremacist and moral monsters have been doing. They use violence, messed up legislation, a prejudice judicial system, and many more tactics to cope with their fear of things that are different than them. It is embedded deep into these people and in most cases this hatred is taught at a young age, and after being told something for so long it changes your perception to always believe its right. So no I don't believe it is possible to negotiate with a moral monster. However,I do not believe every moral monster is a lost cause, some people can see the error in their ways. I think it is a case by case issue. As far as another LA riots, there will be another except I think much bigger. We have people for first time noticing the unjust treatment to minorities, not just from racist whites but also from police departments, through all these outlets of media and social media. These white supremacist think they can strong arm their beliefs on people and can run this country like they always have been. However they fail to understand these new generations of minorities are not our ancestors. That's why all these protest turn into riots when there is a race problem somewhere. There is no more peaceful protesting and no fighting back when protesters are hurt. There is no more letting racist white people comments and actions go. I think these problems and backlash of violence, like in Ferguson, are going keep happening and building up until its going be one big civil war again.

  8. I believe that you can have a dialogue with just about anyone. If you speak to people honestly and you listen to what they have to say in response and vice versa then I think you can definitely have dialogue. I think the problem with a lot of people is that they aren’t willing to listen to others be honest and not just take offense or get angry by it and then have an emotional response. I think that emotional reactions create problems and can sometimes even play into the stereotypes of the oppressor. I do believe that anybody is salvageable and that just comes with experience and education. Once you get around different people and interact with different people that can help you understand other groups of peoples’ perspective on things. In regards to the “White Savior”, I think they are necessary but they should never be in the front of the movement. I think the “White Savior” would overshadow the point of the movement if he or she is too powerful within the movement because the messenger will be looked at more than the message itself. And finally I do believe that there is another LA Riot coming and it won’t be just an isolated thing. I believe that the next riots will be something that takes place throughout the country. Race relations here in America is slowly starting to go down the toilet and it is frustrating black people. I think that the next riots will be powerful and not only will it be black folks who are rioting it will also be many other people with different races, religions, and sexual orientations.

  9. negotiating with these type of people is close to impossible, they're not going to meet us half way and be welling to compromise. they abide by there own rules, with this they feel that they have a high place in our society. and those who are below them are expendable, they're ignorance make them a lost cost, unable to leave the past so there can be a better future. the term moral monsters describes their very nature. their morals goes against the very foundation people of color struggled so hard to obtain, the fact killing or beating up an African american to death is justified by cops and whites alike. to them the color of the skin shows a person's character, the fact that some people are darker then most automatically make them a target. with that does is gives them the option to treat a person of color any way they want to. all over the news that police officer that saw a man as expendable is now the hero, he did a good thing frisking and beating down an innocent man. he's seen as the white savior, he came in and stop a crime that wasn't happening in the first place. but their so call authority gives them the right to commit these actions. another LA riot is possible but this riot could happen any where. with all of the hate crimes and brutality from the police another riot can happen at anytime and anywhere. people all around the US are going through racial profiling and discrimination. if there would to be another riot there would also be more unity. our country is very diverse and if there would be a riot it wouldn't be like the LA riot.

  10. Negotiations with a "moral monster" in society is nearly impossible simply because of the way this country has been created upon racism. A negotiation means to come to an agreement or compromise. It is nearly impossible to do that with a moral monster because racial stereotypes are the basis for their belief systems. It's hard to have a conversation with someone who believes that they are inferior and above you because of their skin color. For example, being black constitutes a criminal in their eyes is the problem. Where a white man shoots and kills people inside a church in South carolina and is driven for food and not shot is the social norm for these people. The judicial system is the biased platform that thrives for inequality for people of color. Some of these monsters, if not most, advocate these monstrosities proudly. These are the same traditional core values of this country for many years before of discrimination, therefore, the apple does not fall far from the tree today. These people teach their kids these beliefs of white supremacy and they absorb it like a sponge. They are lost causes and honestly the original terrorists of society in any place in this world. If you read about societies all across the globe, you will find that any European or white people that entered either driven the native peoples out of their land or enslaved them. Teaching kids that these catastrophes are an accomplishment of their heritage is a disgrace in human society. That is why conversations are nearly impossible and why moral monsters are honestly the real menaces to society and in order for a conversation to occur their must be accountability taken from these racists. They must admit that they are wrong and take responsibility in their actions. Black people have done every single thing in our power to earn their respect. From marching, carrying guns, finally able to live in the same neighborhoods, having the ability to eat in the same dining rooms, and even having a black president. African Americans have submitted to these people for so long that it is finally time that somebody starts taking action of saying that these beliefs are wrong. It will also not start until the same judicial process of law is given to these police officers and anybody getting away with murdering black people. Until then, these riots that are going to keep happening while these police shootings continue. After Keith Lamont Scott was murdered by an officer in Charlotte there were riots. Even in Ferguson there were riots, and until the same justice that is given to innocent black people is given to officers for taking someone life there will continue to be riots.

  11. It may be difficult to negotiate with a moral monster but I do think it is very possible. We may not know but we come across these kinds of people everyday. People that are very afraid of people of color, people that believe The President in office now is the best thing that's happened to this country, people that believe their race is better than all others, and people that strongly believe and pass on racism in general. If a conversation were to happen I think perspective is something that needs to be upfront and thought about to begin. I would not say it is our duty as African Americans to understand their viewpoints and try to persuade these moral monsters but I think having a conversation could at least force minds to be opened, force opinions and facts to be stated, force these people to hear us and understand a different perspective. I do agree there will be another LA Riots, I feel as long as there is racism, as long as minorities are being murdered, as long as we do not have the rights we deserve there will be riots. We as black people will continue fighting back on the many issues that we continue to struggle with. It has to be done for our future children and the next generations. It is very clear that history repeats itself and we are coming to a point where change is not happening and its not happening fast enough.

  12. I guess the question of whether or not we can negotiate with "Moral Monsters" rest on if the moral monster is the perpetrator of the injustice or the person that justifies the action. In some cases this is the same person. In the case of Trayvon Martin the executioner can not be negotiated with because he felt that what he did was both justified and the right thing to do. The people that defended this action, lawyers, conservative media, and countless racists across America alike, all see the upholding of the law as more valuable than the human life that was lost. Any law that allows a set of citizens to disproportionally exercise a right over any other set of citizens is intrinsically immoral. How do you negotiate morality with an innately immoral individual? On the question of whether there will be another LA Riot I refer to hip hop artist Ab-Soul who once said "if all the gangs of the world unified we stand a chance against the military tonight". It's not a question of if but when and where.

  13. This is a very powerful question to be asked because can you really negotiate with a "Moral Monster". Its very confusing because a person that would be considered a moral monster can't and will not see the errors that Is going on. Its like trying to convince a 3 year old baby that its acting like a baby and need to stop by the way the child is 3 is dose not and see what your talking about. Moral monsters are tough all their lives especially entering the work force to not see the other point of views. Its like they are in the sunken place and in a constant state of deep soul rooted blindness. So in my opinion you can't negotiate with one because they are so deep rooted in their own mindset that a conversation will go through one ear and out the other. People who are moral monsters are a lost cause its no need to even have a conversation they going to think something is wrong with you or that you don't "Love America" or see what they are seeing. Forget an LA riot its about to be a country wide rally if things don't change and if both side I mean both black and whites don't come from underneath the sunken place all hell is going to break loose. Here are some video footage to Talk what I mean by many whites do not see what we us blacks see.

  14. In order to negotiate with a "moral monster" you would have to speak to them as to what is "acceptable." There cannot be any type of passion or infliction in your tone otherwise it would come off as aggressive and they would then respond with what they seem fit in or in their words "self-defense". I feel as though when it comes to simple situations such as even talking with them we can't have any type of emotion in how we speak otherwise they would fear for their life. The only emotion they associate us with seems to be anger. We have to prove that we too can act cordial and civilized because they have labeled us as everything but that. This stereotype that black people derive from aggression comes from nothing but ignorance and arrogance. These individuals are a lost cause because they believe we are the inferior race. In other words if it is not their way then it's the highway. To begin dialogue with "moral monsters" it seems the safest way for us to do so is to only speak when spoken to and even that will probably lead to the same outcome. I do believe there will be another LA Riot because times have changed and generations have not been raised to respond like our people did back in the day. I believe we are at our breaking point and soon we will be fed up of protesting, fed up of hashtags of our sisters and brothers, and fed up of cops getting paid leave for murder and finally will initiative on these countless reoccurrences.

  15. A "moral monster" is considered "evil-doer" who is beyond the possibility of moral transformation. With that being said, I do believe those whom we consider Moral Monsters to be a lost cause. I don't believe these people give much room to negotiate. Once a person is set in their ways, beliefs, and upbringing, there is little you can do to repair a person who is corrupt from inside out. I do believe, however, that words sometimes have power over the most deaf of ears. If I had to have a dialogue with one of said individuals, I would have to have a strategic plan of conversation, points that need to be made, what both sides need to fix, and how we can fix them together. The LA Riots may become present again in another form soon. As we've seen in recent history, even up to three weeks ago in Boston, these encounters are starting to become larger and larger, and our people's containment is starting to wear away slowly but surely. This leads me to believe that there will be another few protests before things turn violent because the oppressed are not being heard through the way they're trained to communicate with the "white savior" or moral monster.

  16. If I had the opportunity to speak to a “moral monster” about how I feel about certain issues within society especially those that specifically concern the black community I would because there are things that I would have to say that they need to here. Although I am willing to talk to them, I would not try to negotiate anything with that person. To negotiate with a person, you must first know who are dealing with. The word moral is defined as concerned with the principles of the goodness or badness of human character and the right and wrong of human behavior. The word monster can be defined as one who deviates from normal or acceptable behavior or character. The term “moral monster” is a contradiction as is the person being labeled as such. People like that are not out to fix the wrongs of the world as they relate to what is best for everyone. They want what they think they deserve by any means necessary even if that means stealing, killing, and destroying them everything that is not related to them in the name of morality. These people are a lost cause because most of them are born and bred into this lifestyle. The only people associated with moral monsters that may still be salvageable are the children and in some cases not even them. Regarding me speaking with them, I would begin with how things have not changed and explain to them the ways in which oppression has and is still being systemically supported and enforced. Also, I would make it a point to explain what that means for them and the role they play in that. If there are still people who are acting as moral monsters and there are also people willing to combat those people unrest will be prevalent. I whole heartedly feel that there will be another “LA Riots”. It may not be in Los Angeles but a riot of that magnitude or a bigger one is coming and soon.

  17. In my opinion, it is impossible to negotiate with a "moral monster" because they have their minds made up that white people are superior to all other races. In “The New Jim Crow” the author says that racism is a like a “faith” to them. They believe that because they have white skin they can have everything their way no mater the means they have to go through to get it. And honestly they can because of white privilege. Moral monsters are stuck in the past. They hold on to disturbing morals that their ancestors instilled in them. I honestly believe that it is impossible to negotiate with a person like this because some of them will not even look a person of color in their eye. They will try to belittle you in any way possible, trying to make you seem like you aren’t human. As if we are still considered to be “3/5” of a person like we were during slavery. Moral monsters are harsh and nasty people. But I do believe that moral monsters are raised in homes that are racist, and racism is all they know. Had they not been filled with the outrageous beliefs of their racist ancestors passed down, they would spread love and not hate. Moral monsters can not be salvageable unless they learn to see everyone for their character rather than the color of their skin. I would not waste my time to even converse with them because everything that would come out of their mouth would only offend and anger me. I definitely think there will be another LA Riot in the next 2 years, if not sooner. But it has the potential to start anywhere in the United States. The LA Riots started after the beating of Rodney King. This was the first time police brutality had been broadcasted for the world to see. The people of LA began a riot because they were tired of the police getting away with mistreating people, especially black people. Police still use a lot of force during arrest, and they continue to pull over people of color simply because they can. There have been so many cases where the police kill an innocent black person and serve no jail time. They get put on desk duty for a while and return to their job like nothing every happened. If this continues, the riots will begin. Here is a link to a video I saw on Facebook a while ago that I found very interesting. https://www.facebook.com/MicMedia/videos/1386008451421941/

  18. There really is no infinite way of having a successful negotiation with a moral monster, because they will always look for the loop hole to make sure they’re right. They feel as if their opinion is the final solution as that’s how they were taught and it’ll have to take a LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE to alter their brain activity. Some of these individuals are salvageable just as some are not worth the trouble because or their strong belief in their ways. For the salvageable ones, the conversation would have to be on common ground that show that every decision they make now will have a ripple effect and everything comes with consequences. I feel the only way to break through a moral monster’s conscience would be to describe the most gruesome torturous actions that we as black people have ever had to endure and once I feel that they see the picture, I’d flip it to saying that the victim were white. Because sometimes they need a taste of their own medicine in terms that if they go through what they do to others and psychologically envisioning that happening to themselves and or even a family member; they’d slowly learn to see that they are in the wrong.

In the year 2017, we as a black community have seen what it’s like to get a glimpse of the knowledge and power that was subliminally given to us from our ancestors. In correspondence to us having a successful black unity, we always fall short due to the fact that a majority of us still ridicule and become negative towards each other. I truly feel we as peope are scared of actually being able to take care of ourselves. For example with the Black Lives Matter movement we stopped participating in it, because some people believe that DeRay Mckesson shouldn’t be allowed to stand up for what’s right all because of his sexuality. Or the fact that the whole Black Lives Matter Movement was started by THREE black women who are also apart of the gay community. And even a better example would be the negative backlash that people gave Jesse Williams after his infamous BET awards speech all because they stated that his skin was too light and is was even said about Colin Kappernick’s stand against the NFL. In conclusion until we as a whole all agree that we are all different but want to spread the same message, we will never have another LA Riot.

  19. I do not believe that you can negotiate with a moral monster because no mater the facts or the manner of the conversation they will always find a way to defend what they believe in. Most of these moral monsters are lost calls because most of them are stuck in their denial. We see these examples of moral monsters all the time on CNN when they are having discussions about race. I do not believe their will be another LA riots. I only say this because in today society people have found other ways to fight for justice without rioting. We see forms of non violent justice movements such as The Blacks live matter movement. However in the same breath I do think that this generation will riot if all else fails. I know that this time around if their was to be a "LA riot their will be causalities on both sides of the fence.

  20. Negotiations with an "Moral Monster" could be very difficult. To me it depends on if they are white supremacist or racist by learned behavior and or ignorance. I don't think I would negotiate with a white supremacist under no circumstances. The risk factors are too deep and too heavy. I would prevent having to fear for my life, my families life and destruction of the black community. This kind of ignorance is taught and learned far beyond even my great grandparents lives. The level of hatred toward people of color can not be handled nor dealt with by anyone. Its dangerous and for fear of my life or anyones life its nonnegotiable. It is definitely a lost cause. I believe in diversity. As a black man, born in the 90s, its difficult to fathom hatred due to skin color. I grew up in a very in a very diverse neighborhood, school district until I was 18. My experiences have been positive and encouraging but i know thats not everywhere and everyone. So not sure if I could even open dialogue with a moral monster. The disrespect and disgust they have towards us is not okay. This war is far from over. I think there will be endless riots, and its coming to LA again. I don't know when but it's going to happen again. The way police are afraid of us for no reason and afraid for their lives just because were black is ridiculous. There is more to come. I honestly don't think racism will never go away.

  21. Moral Monsters are stuck in their ways, so there is no point in trying to negotiate with someone who isn’t open minded and think that what they say or believe in is always the right thing to do. Once these monsters are given power they like to try to influence others that their way of thinking is valid and try to justify their actions when it’s just pure ignorance. You would think America would have more leaders that understand diversity and what it means to support it, but for years these Moral Monsters have completely neglected all minority populations and lived life only for their kind (white supremacist). These types of people are defiantly a lost caused because they have been taught and brainwashed to think irrationally. I do believe that the time will come that all minority groups would get fed up of being excluded and mistreated in the “land of the free,” and eventually riot. There’s only so much a person and can take and minority groups have endured years of pain and suffering from these moral monsters.

  23. I do not believe it is possible to have a conversation with a moral monster who is already devout in their beliefs and how they view minorities. They have already decided that how they feel is right and the rest of the world needs to get in line. Most of the time they have been raised to think this way and in this case it is very hard to convince someone to look at things from a different perspective. They feed off of hate and negativity and wants everyone else to suffer s a result of it. Everything in their mind is already fine and there is no need for adjustment. As far as LA riots my answer would be yes and no. Yes, because when people first hear of something tragic happening their first instinct is to act off of anger and not logic. They want the public to feel the pain that they are feeling. I say no because there have been times in the recent past where people are able to gather together and discuss the needs of the community and receive positive results. The end result of both of these is because of the actions of the moral monster, but in hindsight others have to do what they think is best for themselves even with major obstacles in their way.

  24. It is nearly impossible to negotiate with a moral monster, because these are people who has the same beliefs past down from generations to generations that it is no way that anybody could change the way that they think or what they believe in. Specially if these people are white supremacist and racist they will never change their beliefs because of their ignorance and stubbornness because they always want to be right. I feel like some of these people are salvageable because some people can change as we have seen over the years, but majority of them are a lost cause because they have been so convinced that their beliefs are right. I would begin my dialogue with asking them, Why do you think that you are better than us?. I also do believe that there will be another LA riot, especially since Trump is in the office America seems like it is going downhill and history always repeats itself.

  25. To be a “moral monster” you must first be in tune with social justice issues and fight for what’s right within our society. How do you negotiate with a monster? Negotiations with a "moral monster" in society are nearly impossible simply because people are not willing to listen. The way our country was started upon racism and the feeling of superior. A negotiation means to come to an agreement or comp prevents even people in the 21st century from being receptive. Ultimately, you can’t possibly have a conversation if you don’t have a seat at the table. If you aren’t afforded the chance to even be in the room you can’t engage in a conversation no matter how thought provoking or right you are. In terms of a “moral monster,” it is nearly impossible to have a conversation because racial stereotypes that are the foundation of their ideology.
The racist bigots in our society brutalize the thought of being different. I will begin my dialogue with the explaining the clear ideology of racism. The ideology underlying racist practices often includes the idea that humans can be split into distinct groups that are different due to their social behavior/class and their innate capacities as well as the idea that they can be classified as inferior or superior. Racism exists when ideas and assumptions about racial classes are used to justify and imitate a racial hierarchy and racially structured society that unreasonably limits access to resources, rights, and privileges based on race. The “reverse racism” card is often pulled by white people when people of color call out racism and discrimination. Or even create “safe” spaces for themselves that white people aren’t included in. The drive behind the reverse racism argument seems to be a longing to prove that people of color don’t have it terrible, and that there are still forms of “black success.” They’re not the only ones that are put at a disadvantage or targeted because of their race. It really all comes down to the facts. At some point, the actual meaning of “racism” got confused with other aspects of racism. It’s possible for white people to experience prejudice from black people and other “non-whites” which include those of the same skin color but other seen different from separations like religion. Black people can have ignorant, backwards, and totally wrong views about white people (even though it isn’t unwarranted), as well as other non-white races. That is not in idea that I am trying to argue, but racism is far more complex. The phenomena of being a racist in my opinion comes from being the majority. Other races don’t have the luxury of being racist, arguably prejudice, but not racist. As outlined above racism describes a system of disadvantage based on race. However, other races can’t be classified as “racist” because we don’t stand to benefit from such a system. Some people simplify racism by making “racist” and “prejudiced” are interchangeable. But racism is a concept that operates on both an individual and institutionalized spectrum. At its core, racism is a system in which a dominant race benefits off the oppression of another. Simply put in the United States non-white races can’t be racist because we have never been the dominate race. We don’t live in a society where every racial group has equal power, status, and opportunity (even in the 21st century).

    1. Yes, white people all over the world and throughout history have experienced tragedies like slavery and persecution, but in the context of American history that is being taught to children every day in school, white people have not been enslaved, colonized, or segregated against on the scale that black people have. They do not perpetually face housing or job discrimination, police brutality, poverty, or incarceration at the same level that black people do. This is not to say that they do not experience things at all and that their lives are perfect. What’s astounding about the reverse racism argument is the way in which it reveals some racists’ deep need to deny the idea of having any privilege. There is a difference from benefiting from your privilege and accepting it than denying it exist at all. Rather than acknowledging and rigorize the real problem people of color still facing in 2017 dealing with racism, white racists and blind blacks will go to the ends of the earth in order to justify these injustices.
In my opinion, people fail to understand the power in the new generations of minorities are not like the nonviolence approach of our ancestors. That's why majority of protest turn into riots when there is a race problem somewhere. There is no more peaceful protesting especially when black people are dying at the hands of whites every day. There is no more of letting racist white people comments and actions go because we are supposed to turn the other cheek. I think these problems and backlash of violence, like in Ferguson, Louisiana and Baltimore, are going keep happening. As we've seen in recent history, these encounters are starting to become larger in scale and size. Our people's containment to always be politically correct in the eyes of whites are starting to wear away. Modern-day movements are birthing a change in the climate, conversation and ultimately action. This makes me believe that the oppressed are changing the way they communicate with the "white savior" or “moral monster” figure. If this continues to happen the LA race riots will happen again maybe not in LA but on a larger scale.

  26. The chances of Negotiating with a moral monster is slim to none. If you are not considered a person that has power in society, then negotiation is futile. People who are considered moral monsters don’t just come out of thin air. These moral monsters passed the same beliefs through generations from past to present day. Due to these individuals being difficult to negotiate with some but few of these individuals are salvageable. Individuals have been attempted to show the unrecognizable behavior in racism due to family beliefs and heritage. The dialogue I would have would consist of addressing main concerns, solving little problems of both sides, I would pressure unity at all times, and stay consistent to accomplishing these goals. I believe there will be another LA Riot but on a much bigger scale. Racism and wrong doing are happening all over the US and has to come to a stop soon because people if getting tired of the same treatment. If nothing is done soon there will be chaos.

  27. A moral monster is defined as an evil doer who is beyond the possibility of moral transformation. Knowing that, it can already be said that trying to negotiate with this type of person would only end up benefiting the "monster" in the long haul. Throughout the course of history, our African ancestors negotiated with the "moral monsters" or Europeans, and the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade came from that. There was negotiation between black people and those high in political power, and the Civil War came from that. There was negotiation between the FBI and The Nation of Islam and that yielded the assassination of Malcolm X and the establishment of COINTELPRO. Throughout history and the wake of time here in the "New World" as we know it, and it has not been the most beneficial when it comes to that of Black people. However, if I had to negotiate with the moral monster it would be the way they negotiate with black people by making it seem as though you are going along with what they want for it to have a draw back to end in the favor of the oppressed. One would have to upper hand the one with power of the nation. Those that have been in power "to serve and protect" have been getting the upper hand of the law for years. There has never been a system put in place to serve and protect all people. White police officers have been corrupt, members of the Klan, and a self governed entity since the beginning of time. Now saying that, that does not account for all white police officers, but it can been seen. From Rodney King being the first on camera, officers being a lynchings, and police brutality officers have been getting away with murder for years.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeizXXPY5Hw

This is a video showing at a traffic stop in Southern state Georgia a police officer tells a frightened white woman that she has no need to be afraid because we only kill black people. Why would someone want to negotiate with these people.

I feel as though some white people are salvageable, the ones that are not moral monsters, but how could you even tell. White people have been taught since the beginning of the history we are taught that black people are inferior to them and they are superior. Taught that blacks are animals and savages and only are good for working under their watch or the black person will not amount to anything more than a worker and not supposed to live lavish lives. This type of programming has been passed on from slave owners to their children, to their children's children, and so on all the way to the current time. It's hard to break that kind of cycle of teaching and that type of teaching is only taught at home and by families that feel that way. Those types of people are not salvageable. The ones that did not have that kind of upbringing are the ones that may have a chance at not being a lost cause and being salvageable. The dialogue would have to begin with the honest truth of how the person feels about the other race and vice versa. Only through this type of real conversation would anything ever start to become being on the right track.

Lastly, I do believe that there would be the possibility of being another LA Riot. What happened in Charleston, VA had the potential to be even worse that it was. The tension that media portrays when it comes to race has the potential with the right incident or major event to happen all over again. Depending on the incident it can be on smaller scale than LA, but it can possibly have the potential to be even greater than that.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6pWyBfCXzg

This video shows mention of a few small scale incidents compared to the LA Riots. Just from these it has the potential, but will it is the question.

  28. I don't believe you can argue with a moral monster, much less do I care to reason with one. You can encounter ignorant people of all manner on Facebook commenting on and rationalizing the murder and or harassment of minorities and in the same breath when the video of that white nurse came out where she refused to take the blood of a patient those same people that rationalize killing minorities were up in arms with the way the officers was treating the nurse that was just doing her job. I honestly don't even have the patience to argue with white people it's legitametly not my job to educate them on their ignorance anymore when everyone has a cellphone in their hand and could easily google the cruelty that people of color suffer at a much higher rate then white people. I don't want their apologies either because like my mother alway says "what the hell does sorry do for me?" The ignorant will continue to be ignorant as long as they choose to be, but as the years go by that number is shrinking slowly but surely.

  29. There is no negotiation with a “moral monster”. What are we negotiating? Our rights as humans that gets degraded way every decade? Our value in the community and how America stays rich off keeping the poor poor? Or how black people as whole weren’t intended to follow the constitution because they weren’t considered humans? These white privileged Americans we’ve learned to call moral monsters are just that. Many of them have morals that have been instilled in them down from generation from generation. These morals are very peculiar against African Americans. After the civil war, these Laws we know as the Jim crow laws is what was the steady foundation of the “morals” that the “moral monsters” live by.
White Americans, many of them were and still are racist. These white people consumed as moral monster are a lost cause all the way. They are stuck in their ways. Many of these moral monsters lye within our political system. Our judicial system alone is 89% of moral monsters, old farts who have been in their place of position for decades. These people in power are racist and are indeed conservatives who will not change anything in favor of African Americans. Most of these moral monsters are simply lost causes due to the fat that it’s a generational education and believe; and some even get made when their kids kids kids don’t turn out to be a moral monster aka a racist prick like them. Not saying we as a people can’t change but negotiating isn’t the way.
As far as there being another LA Riots I am 77% sure another riot like that can and will happen, might not be in LA but is coming about. We’ve already had a riot recently, one was in Ferguson, Missouri which was caused by the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by a white police officer Darren Wilson on August 9, 2014, in Ferguson, Missouri. Boston. It’s being recorded, the wrong doings of our people by police, it’s all over tv, social medias, way more rotation than Rodney king could ever have endured in 1991/92 and yet these murders are still set free, than white privilege is real. White students have less qualifications for a scholarship to hbcu than a black student applying for a minority scholarship at a pwi. Our judicial system thrives off black people being imprisoned. These are all fair causes for another riot.

  30. Moral monsters or the " White savior" have since their origination been a symbol of American Culture. This view centers around that African Americans can't function without whites to govern them & at times to intervene for the "greater good". The ideals, values, characters and even headlines have become synonymous with our nations history. The story most often exemplified in American history rarely is aligned with the true harsh realities faced in our nation. A perfect example of that is in the irony that certain white folks believe blacks in America need to be saved from themselves. You can't negotiate with someone or something that views you as a lesser person or one to be pitied because in essence that means you have to validate yourself. America is a breeding ground for moral monsters because its a society built on the stringent lines of one races culture standards. No one I believe is necessarily a lost cause unless they are a bigot with hate in their heart but negotiate involves giving up some things in exchange for others and I don't ever think you should compromise who you are to please anyone. A dialogue can only take place where conversations is invited & respected. If a white supremacist or nationalist truly is ever to change it'll have to take place in their own hearts and mind. With regards to another LA riots I believe that black America is prime for another revolution. There has been a strong resurgence in our communities to come together & fight the immoral & unjust standards held within this country. The backlash that has occurred from recent police brutality cases like in Ferguson & Baton Rouge , or faux vigilante "killings like Trayvon Martin the black community is responding back. The social & race climate that we are heading into over the next several years with the current administrations "blind eye" validation of white nationalism will cause the race divide to increase between black & white Americans. Do I believe that another LA riot will occur , unlikely but is it possible, yes.

  31. The white “moral monster” has been detrimental to the life of black women and men since the beginning of slavery. For centuries it has been almost encoded in their ancestors that the black life is less worthy, valuable, and important. The moral monsters viewing of black life has remained the same from slavery to freedom, from freedom to Jim Crow, from Jim Crow to the Civil Rights Movement, and from the Civil Rights movement to the new Jim Crow. When you go back and time and fast forward to now, you can see clearly where the disconnection between the black community and the “moral monsters” lay. To put it quite simple they don’t understand us and their superiority complex only makes their one track mindset even more blinding to them. I do not believe that some of them aren’t salvageable. I believe that quite a few of them can unlearn what seems to be embedded in their systems about the black life and community. For the learning process to begin I think that they need to be presented with the cold hard statistics about the treatment of black people by law enforcement, employers, and even banks. Numbers don’t lie, but it needs to be taken a step further and explained to them why this has been occurring to the black life since we first arrived in America. They need to know that are deep seeded issues are not because of the fault of our own but the systematic oppression that we have faced legally, by former presidents such as Reagan and Bill Clinton, lawmakers, and employers. Documentaries like Hidden Colors and books like The New Jim Crow are essential if the learning process is to begin. Even though I believe that many are salvageable, I have to say at this point, I don’t even think it matters. It’s been far too long of the same thing and I believe that if they weren’t aware before what is the point of telling them now? This is one of my issues with the Black Lives Matter movement, we are way past the times of needing to prove our worth to the white man. Black lives matter simply because they do and I think it is unnecessary to try and tell the people who don’t get it by now about us. As a people we simply need to move as a unit with the help of those who are down for us and disregard the rest. We need to stop asking for permission, recognition, and to be valued and start doing all of this for ourselves. We need to stop asking and start creating and TAKING. We’ve had sprouts of riots similar to the LA riots but that just didn’t have as big as an impact as the ones in LA. I think that if one is to take place it will be in a smarter way, instead of destroying our own communities I think that we will attack the upper scale communities and established businesses that are using their money to keep the black community under.

  32. - The way you negotiate with a “moral monster” is by understanding how they operate in order successfully communicate. I believe that there is no such thing as a lost cause. If someone is willing to learn then you can change some hearts. I would begin by talking about who I am. Lastly, I believe there could be another riot if were are pushed far enough and cannot seem to handle it any other way. Sometimes riots are started because people feel like they have no other way to be heard

  33. I do not believe that we can negotiate with these moral monsters. In their minds, they think that what they are doing is morally right and justified by the laws they believe this nation stands on. Throughout history, things such as the shooting of Latasha Harling and Rodney King have been going on for years and years before. The difference then is that now we have technology to capture the injustice but even then it does not seem to matter. Our justice system has failed the black community time and time again, even with as much evidence possible to prove the wrong doings of a victim. Yet still, people are set free or not charged with anything but minimum time suspended because they believe that any race besides white is expendable. We could never begin a dialogue until these people realize the hurt and betrayal the country and justice system has failed everyone. I do believe that another LA Riot could happen and very soon. People cannot sit around in peaceful protest forever and eventually one specific event will be the trigger for another major riot.

  34. I believe a person can talk to these 'moral monsters' until they are blue in the face but I do not think just because a person speaks with them means they are going to listen. A person who believes they are protecting their people or saving the black race from themselves has grown up with these ideals planted in their minds from a young age. That kind of influence cannot be changed by a simple conversation unless it is being had with someone of the same race. Like Tim Wise said in his article Trayvon Martin, White America and the Return of Dred Scott, there are no rights the white man is bound to respect unless it benefits them. This conversation has to be had within their own race first. I think it is really hard to change someones opinion, especially on race, institutionalized racism they have grown up around but cannot recognize. They don't know how unless they were in the opposite position.
I believe another LA Riots is bound to happen partly because it already has. When Micheal Brown's body was laid out on the street that city went in flames. People were not opposed to rioting that night and days that followed. It was not to the magnitude of LA but that also could be because Ferguson is not as big as LA. I also believe the unrest in America has become so normalized in the media we might not recognize when another riot happens unless it happens in D.C. I think peaceful protests are always a nice way to get something noticed but sometimes something bigger has to happen.

  35. I think negotiation with a moral monster is tough because some already have there mind & thoughts made up on things and with you trying to negotiate with them may cause an uproar. some of these moral monster are salvageable if you put things in their perspective and some are a lost cause because of the way they were taught growing up. I would begin this dialogue by stating my points and expressing my feelings on the situation and then go from there. I think another La riot can happen if something was to happen again because people are rioting all over the world for there rights

  36. A “moral monster” is considered an evil doer that cannot transform back to morality. I believe there is no way to negotiate with a “moral monster,” these types of individuals are trapped in their thoughts and have no desire of negotiating. On the other hand, I would love to have a conversation with a “moral monster” to discuss their opinions on police brutality on the black community; why do they think police officers aren’t receiving harsher consequences for killing blacks? Why are black individuals such a “threat?” and how do you think that this issue can be resolved? After hearing their answer, I would not even think to negotiate with them only because their thinking is out of this world and I simply cannot tolerate their thoughts. These individuals are a lost cause, there is literally no hope for them because of Donald Trump. Trump has opened the door for “moral monsters” to act the way they want and it be acceptable. Having him as their President makes every single one of them a lost cause.
I definitely think there will be another LA Riots, the only I reason I think because a black individual has not been shot, well not that I am aware of. I think once this happens individuals will act just like they did in the 90’s. This I feel is bound to happen because history is repeating itself, just like the song “F*ck the police” is exactly how black individuals re feeling.

  38. I believe it is possible to negotiate with some “moral monsters,” but the rest of them are a lost cause. Most “moral monsters” were raised to think their skin was superior. It would be challenging to have dialogue with “moral monsters” because they still think that black and brown people are still 3/5 or less of a person. I feel like the “moral monster” would have to go through something in order to get them to listen or their opinion to change. The “moral monster” actually has to want to listen and change for themselves. I don’t think they would give a black or brown person the time of day to listen to their opinion. I would begin with teaching “moral monsters” African American history and maybe getting their ancestor history to actually see if this is “their country.” Also showing them the Nate Parker version of Birth of a Nation, since the 1915 version showed the caucasian perspective and the African Americans as “the bad guys.” I do believe there will be / has been another LA Riots. The LA Riots were caused because there wasn’t any justice shown for innocent people. These past years, there has been many riots due to not getting justice and police brutality. Until there is any justice shown, riots/protests like the ones for Freddie Gray, Trayvon Martin, etc. will continue.

There no negotiating with a moral monster. These beast have embedded hatred among there heart and soul. At times i fell sorry for them because these people are not slave owners like the founding fathers of the corrupt country but only mere children who was brought up and taught these hateful ways. Almost like religion. I don't necessarily remember the day i became a christian it was more so something i just came into. We are to deep and the morals of this soil are already carved into every piece of land. The system we live in is focused on destroying the community of blacks from within and i fell that is the biggest issue. If we want to work for a change we have to start within our community and rebuild it rather than worry about proving ourselves to another race.

  40. I honestly don't believe there is a way to change a moral monsters mindset when it comes to black citizens rights. I feel like it is already permanent in their mind that people of color are beneath them.
I believe they are a lost cause at this point because it is 2017. Moral Monsters should realize by now that black people won't take injustice anymore. I haven't seen an effort from moral monsters to change their behavior or to encourage other moral monsters to change.
If I were to try to change a moral monsters mindset I would start by asking them about any misconceptions they have about black people and clearing those up. I would then explain how black people will no longer tolerate the disrespect and injustice America has put them through any longer.
If something tragic were to happen that causes mayhem in the black community, I do believe there could be another uprising like the L.A. Riots.

  42. A person with a moral monster mindset can not be negotiated with or bargained with. Once a person has this mindset it is up to the individual to seek life changing opportunities to help them better grasp other people's perspective. For this change to occur the moral monster must be willing to do something different and that's hard when prejudices have been ingrained since an early age. A dialogue would never be acceptable to people with this mind set because most are not ready to realize the pain that our country is in. The Los Angeles riots is just a matter of time to occur in today's climate. America has already faced several racially charged scrimmages in Charlottesville VA and in California. There is too much disrespect and ignorance of others for todays powder keg not to eventually blow.

  43. A moral Monster: is an evil doer who is beyond the possibility of moral transformation. This definition is not concerned with the origin of evil. A rotten apple was once an ordinary apple.
The answer to your question on "how do you negotiate with moral monsters" is fairly simple, you cannot. Going off the definition that is stated above once a person is deemed a moral monster the person is not salvageable. However, since we are talking about people, I do believe we are capable of shedding ignorance and growing. But only if one is willing to truly listen and be open to change. If I were having a conversation with a moral monster I would first ask them if they were willing to have a honest conversation based on facts, and not hatred mixed with unsupported stereotypes and biased opinions. If they couldn't comply, then there would be no need to continue the conversation because it would be a waste of breath and time. Lastly, I do believe there will be another LA riot, because history only repeats itself especially if you aren't educated on the past. Many people thought we were living in a "post racial society" because Obama won office and a few "token" black people are doing very well. However, the gap between whites and blacks are still very significant. And with number 45 winning office, his supporters have gotten even bolder with their racist tactics. With everything thats been going on lately in this country I do believe it will be another race riot .
